With part of the proceeds to benefit Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children the “31st Annual Hui O He’e Nalu Independence Day Paddleboard & Stand Up Paddle Race presented by Hulakai” is set to take place on Saturday, July 4, 2009 starting at Sunset Beach and finishing at Waimea Bay on the beautiful North Shore of O’ahu. The Paddleboard division will have a start time at 11:00am, with the Stand up paddle division to follow at 11:15am. The 3.5 mile course includes a straight run from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay, with a 90 degree buoy left turn at Waimea Bay point, then a 500 yard paddle sprint to the shores of Waimea Bay, followed by a 50 yard beach run finish. This race is considered the largest & longest consecutive running paddleboard & stand up paddle race in the State. We’re expecting over 400+ competitors to be paddling through the North Shore course! This is truly an honor for an all-Hawaiian surfing organization, the Hui O He’e Nalu (aka: Da Hui). This race includes both male and female divisions, along with the ever favorite parent-child division. In observance with our Hawaiian tradition, a division using an all-wood (any type) board is included. We are also continuing a “free-of-charge” entry fee to our active-duty Military personnel in both the paddleboard and stand up divisions. A copy of their military ID is required upon entry form submittal. This is Da Hui’s way of saying “Mahalo for serving our country”. Also scheduled is the popular Waimea Bay Keiki Ocean Challenge, which is in its 3rd year and being presented once again by the Waimea Bay Lifeguards. Entry forms will be available at the Waimea Bay Lifeguard Tower the morning of July 4, 2009. Only 100 entries will be allowed and registration will conclude at 1:00pm the day of the event. Keiki race start time is at 2pm. Entry forms will be available at Quiksilver Boardriders located at 1714 Kapiolani Boulevard or Pacific Rad Sports at 94-1388 Moaniani Street in Waipio (down the street from Costco).
