HELP ME WITH RATINGS

Why are we so tragically slow in certain aspects of Nintendo updates I haven't a clue. But months after sending mixed signals basically talking of premium content, but swearing that free DLC was the new dirty word of 2011, the premium content finally came... as well as free downloadable demos... sadly if you thought the free demos would come string free... well tough. There is a catch.

Unlike Sony PSP demos, which has unlimited plays, Nintendo 3DS demos... are limited. In the case of RE Revelations it's 30 plays, so you should really not play the demo until you can devote your full attention to playing the demo... sheesh, though Nintendo, even when we finally pry something free from your iron tight grip it still comes with strings attached. Apparently free is still a dirty word for Nintendo.

So what are we looking at here? Two demos this month.

Resident Evil : Revelations
Publisher : CAPCOM
Genre : Survival Horror
Pre-Rating : Highly Anticipated

Resident Evil

After the first... and only... Resident Evil on the original DS, the portable version of the original, you probably thought there was no future for the franchise on Nintendo handhelds. Then the 3DS and Mercenaries came out... and now Revelations. And look, Jill's alive in this game... she supposed to have died in Resident Evil 5 on PS3 and XBox360.

I'll go over the plot in the full review, but for now you play as Jill, as she wakes up on a tricked out cruise ship ready to do the Resident Evil: Dead Aim thing... only you'll do it right this time.

Imagine that!

I won't go into the story, we can save that for the full review. Instead, we'll cover what this demo shows... and what it shows is that this is going to be a must-own 3DS game.

Visually, the game looks sweet, and thanks to a setting that doesn't make it a requirement to own the new 3DS Circle Pro before you buy it along with this game. That was great since you have a chance to see how easy it is to play this right out of the case without a massive learning curve that would kill enjoyment. Within the first hour you'll have this under control, quickly learning all the quirks of controls. Moving, swapping weapons and later putting the Item Scanner to good use, fighting and reloading, as well as the exploration of the cruise ship (the start of Revelations). Set in a Resident Evil 4 over the shoulder third person shooter game play, the game looks quite immersive and engaging, drawing the gamer into this brand new dark world to explore, and kill whatever comes at you... sadly though, no zombies from what I read... now I want to play Mercenaries to see how the 3DS handled zombies last year gaming and graphics wise (graphical blood splatter, decapitations, etc).

What else is there to say?

  • Herb use is now attached to the A button, so now you don't need to go to the menu just to heal yourself.

  • Your weapons are easily accessible from the L and R shoulder buttons once you have two or more weapons.

  • Swapping weapons and Item scanner is as easy as using the D-pad. Using the Item Scanner is also easy, making searching for hidden things a snap.

If this demo doesn't get you hyped about owning this game? Better go see a doctor, YOU might be a zombie.

Highly recommended. Review coming soon, knock on wood. OK, next up we go from Survival Horror to surviving another possibly soul slaying event... the 2012 Summer Olympics. Oh. Joy.

Mario and Sonic at the 2012 London Summer Olympics
Publisher: SEGA
Genre : Sports
Pre-Rating : Recommended

Mario and Sonic

Don't get me wrong, I do like the Olympics... in small doses. Once every two year doses. And zero contact with the underwhelming cookie cutter non Mario slash Sonic themed Olympics games cranked out every two years.

Lets face it, Since the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and whoever is presently cranking out official Olympics games as of 2012 don't even care about innovating their game franchise, let alone making said games fun, its up to other game makers to do the dirty job... in this case the makers of Mario and Sonic at the Olympics: Now arriving in the land of Monty Python, Top Gear, and Doctor Who for their Summer 2012 edition set in London.

This is, admittedly, my first dance with Mario and Sonic... uh, no wait I mean Princess Peach and Amy... don't touch me guys... in the format of an Olympics game so I'm actually looking forward to the experience... I hope. Well let's get to it, awkward wording aside (sorry, my bad attempt at awkward humor... I'm sorry).

The demo features five events from the game set up in a medley challenge. Play all five, and the best score accumilated at the end (earning so much points for first, second, third and fourth) wins. No character or team selection in the demo, that is handled randomly here.

The events you compete in are as follows...

25m Rapid Fire Pistol
Using the R shoulder button you are auto panned across a board of five targets. The object of the event is to score as close if not five bullseye each turn in order to get the highest score possible.

I found this pretty easy to pick up, and even got a few 10s in my go at it.

Football (aka Soccer)
Score five goals. Using the Circle pad you pull the pad down to aim (or spin it for a hook shot which I could never master).

Timing is everything, aim is everything... because the goalie is uncomfortably accurate. Because if this I have yet to score even once in this event.

Luckily the rest of the events are easier.

Trampoline
...seriously? Trampoline? That is an actual Olympics event? Really?... anyway keep your character centered on the trampoline while tapping the A button as the target circles converge to boost your jumping... its alot easier to do it than for me to explain it, trust me.

100m Backstroke
Only event of the demo featuring the ladies. Anyway you draw circles to swim, watching the top screen as you have to draw within the circle above to swim fast... don't worry, its easier than it sounds once you get the hang if it since you clearly see the circle your drawing as you draw it (just make steady even circles, no need to rush).

Finally BMX... and at last a game that uses the motion sensors of the 3DS. Hold the 3DS flat, using the curcle pad to steer, A to jump and leaning the 3DS vack and forth to control your bike in jumps... yes, that pesky timing is everything but you'll get the hang of this pretty quick and improve each time you play this.

Hmm... I'm not one for sports fare, especially Olympics games, but this... intrigues me.

Recommended. If your looking to relive the Olympics in a fresh dynamic energetic way that is way better than the dull cookie cutter average Olympics game rolled out every two years? Bet you'll love this. Try the demo, and if you approve...? Well, full review coming in the future, knock on wood.

Lets see... what else before we wrap up... yes I did see the esurance Sonic commercial. No I have not the slightest clue what kind of esurance Sonic needs. Yes, strangely enough I felt a surge toward reviewing Sonic titles after seeing that... don't ask me why.

So what are we doing...

Next Month...

? ... Good question. Hmmm... got it. Next month lets see if I cant get ahold of Resident Evil Revelations, and more importantly the Circle Pro clip on for full dissertation and review.

We'll start with my contacting Nintendo's PR staff, which I did. Then I'll update you on what is known on the pad and then... we'll see. Updates on the goings on with Nintendo and PR over at my blog at http://bignopoly.blogspot.com.

See you next month!
