The Oheo Gulch on Maui's lush Hana Side was carved into Haleakala's cone over the last million years by wind and rain and the steady flow of the Pipiwai Stream. The series of magnificent waterfalls and tranquil sculpted pools is part of the Haleakala National Park System. The pools are open to the public for hiking, visiting historical sites, picnicing and swimming.
The Pipiwai Trail, begining above the lower pools, is one of the best hikes on Maui. 4 miles round trip, the trail leads through an extensive bamboo forest to the Waimoku Falls, a 400 foot cascade down a sheer lava rock wall. Along the Pipiwai Trail there are several spectacular waterfalls and secluded pools.
The lower pools are always crowded on weekends and the large gravel parking lot is often full. After crossing the bridge over the stream, the parking lot is located makai. The fee for visiting the park is only $10 per vehicle. There are no concessions so pack a picnic lunch... then take the plunge!
