Richard McMahonRichard McMahon
A hiking and camping enthusiast since his Boy Scout days, Richard McMahon has taken hundreds of hikers and backpackers into Hawaii's wilderness areas for adventure travel companies Mountain Travel, REI, and Terres d'Aventur. He has led hiking trips to the mountains of Turkey and the former Czechoslovakia, on a bicycle tour of south China, and on an elephant safari in northern Thailand. His travels have led him to extensive high mountain hiking in the Alps and in Japan, and to the summits of many walk-up mountains, including Fuji, Ararat, and Kilimanjaro. Richard is the author of Adventuring in Hawaii, Camping Hawaii, Scenic Driving Hawaii, and of two books on camping in California. He also writes a hiking column for the Honolulu Advertiser. An active member of the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club, he is editor of its newsletter. The best way to hike the trails on Oahu is with the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club and the Sierra Club. Both have permission to hike many routes not open to the general public. Neither one requires membership to join most hikes, although non-members pay a small fee, and they restrict certain hikes to members only. For info on membership and hiking schedules, see the following web sites. HTMC & Sierra Club.
