Waiawi - Productive or Pesky?
Rated 4.6 Stars
How can Hawai`i control the invasive waiawi - strawberry guava? One option is to see it as a resource. The wood is useful, and the fruit is tasty. Humans have an amazing ability to deplete resources. Let's use our power for good! More »

Technology is Not Always the Culprit
Many times we blame technology for problems that are caused by humans. We often find ourselves searching for technical solutions to problems that are not technical in nature. Most folks would benefit from the principle of Occam's Razor. This tenet suggests that, all else being equal, the simplest explanation is usually the most accurate. More »

Wie...First Stage Liftoff
Rated 5.0 Stars
Her parents watching intently, the temperature rising to 100 degrees and Michelle Wie looked cool and relaxed with her caddy by her side. It's the LPGA Q School, short for QUALIFYING school, something no one in the Wie circle expected her to have to go through. But as B.J. Wie told reporters earlier this year, "we've run out of options." More »

Shower'd With Love... Throwing a Fabulous Bridal Shower
As the wedding peeks around the corner, showers are a wonderful way to remind the bride how much love and support she has from her dearest friends and family. After a whirlwind engagement, the wedding shower is often the first time a bride can relax, have fun and celebrate her upcoming day. Showers are a time to honor the bride with gifts and well wishes. A great shower, customarily thrown by the maid of honor and bridesmaids, is memorable, carefully planned and of course, a blast! More »

Bari and Ed's Excellent Adventure
Rated 5.0 Stars
This month, we'll be chronicling a day-in-the-life of my boy Bari. A day that will forever live in infamy... Well, at least for him. You see, a few months ago, Bari underwent LASIK surgery to correct his "blind-as-a-bat" vision. And since his folks and lady friend were all out of town, I was the lucky third stringer to get the call to be his chauffeur/nurse/caretaker for the day. Lucky me. More »

Prepare for Flu Season
Phyllis could be the poster child for disaster preparedness. Every hurricane season, her cupboards are stocked with bottled water, SPAM, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit. But, there was one time of year she was never ready for: flu season. "It seemed like I was getting sick every flu season. I had no resistance," says Phyllis. More »

Losing Data Can Be Such a Painful Thing
Losing data can be such a painful thing! I know from personal experience how painful and more than that, how costly of a mistake it could be! I asked our techs in the office to try and take a look at my broken hard drive and even with the guru's standing right behind me, nothing. No pulse, no action no life. It was a horrible experience. But I learned from that experience and I am here to share it with you today. More »

Tiger's Transition
Rated 5.0 Stars
If you were to take a look at the swings of the greatest players of all time, you would find a commonality amongst all of them... athleticism. Just take a look on YouTube to find the great old swings of Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, young Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and now Tiger Woods. What you won't see is cookie cutter looking swings or compact, "efficient" techniques. But what you will see is pure, unadulterated athleticism. More »

Still in the Starting Blocks
September started out with a killer town swell, one of the best all summer. It was solid 3-5 with a few bigger ones and was more consistent than some of the earlier swells we had. The southeast direction of the swell was a bit off for Ala Moana bowls, but #3s down the way was said to be "all time" . The Northshore came back to life a little bit, but we are still anxiously awaiting some solid waves out here since there hasn't been anything over 4 ft since last spring. More »

Tropic Thunder
Movies directed by Ben Stiller, or starring him for that matter, have always been a joy to watch. Whether its Reality Bites (1994), The Cable Guy (1996), or Zoolander (2001), the stories innocently poke fun at the film industry and Hollywood. His latest release Tropic Thunder is now his witty parody on the same subjects, but with much more hilarious punches. More »

Minimize Phantom Loads
Did you know that many home appliances and electronic devices consume small amounts of electricity even when they appear to be inactive or turned off? When the waves get over 8' on the North Shore, I surf Puaena Point. It's a D-list spot that for some bathymetric reason, tames down swell size so that aged geezers like me can still hit the surf without drowning. Don't E-mail Photos
What's the best way to get a lot of photos you have taken with your digital camera to others who may want them? Now days with the high mega-pixel cameras, each photo maybe on the average of one to two megabytes. So sending 20-30 photos will most likely not make it through most of e-mail systems.
