Henry's Place, located on Beach Walk in Waikiki, is a hard-to-find grocery store that sells some of the best homemade ice cream around.I love finding those hole-in-the-wall eateries and shops that only the locals know about, whether it’s a small ramen stand or a consignment shop.
Which is why I love Henry’s Place (210 Beach Walk, 808.926.0213) in Waikiki.
The first time I tried to find it, I walked around the block and completely missed it.
A friend of mine had told me about the great homemade ice cream and fresh fruits sold at this little store, which has been around for more than 20 years, now tucked away on Beach Walk. (This is its third location.)
We had eaten dinner at Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin — an other must-try — and craved something sweet and cold. Since Mondo Gelato had closed on Waikiki Beach Walk, I figured we should try Henry’s Place. If we could only find it.
It’s in a weird location, under a moped rental shop. The little store sells more than just homemade ice cream; you can find everything from sandwiches to goza mats here.
It reminds me of those little neighborhood stores you find in places like Kalihi and Waipahu, where owners make the prepared foods they sell and residents have been shopping there for years.
The owner, Henry Takahashi, makes the ice cream he sells, using fresh ingredients and packaging them in small Styrofoam containers for $4 each. Flavors include mango, coconut, papaya, lychee, apple banana and, my favorite, Kona coffee.
