Switch to CFLs and Reduce Your Energy Use!Switch to CFLs and Reduce Your Energy Use!
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) use up to 75% less energy and can last up to ten times longer than traditional incandescent lightbulbs. Following are some purchasing tips:
  • When purchasing CFLs read the package carefully to match the bulb to the fixture. Not all CFLs can be used in enclosed fixtures or wet locations.
  • Use CFLs in the light fixtures that are used for the longest periods and at least 15 minutes at a time to avoid shortening the bulb's lifetime.
  • There is a variety of styles of CFLs on the market, including the common spiral shape, A-line, chandelier, globe, reflector, three-way, and dimmable bulbs.
  • We recommend that you purchase CFLs that bear the ENERGY STAR® logo, which means the product meets federal energy efficiency guidelines. Also look for the UL® mark, which indicates the product meets the safety guidelines of the Underwriters Laboratories.
  • Check the wattage of the incandescent bulb that you are replacing with a CFL. Purchase a CFL whose package says it is equivalent to that same wattage. You can also check the lumen rating on the package. The higher the lumen rating, the greater the light output. Refer to the following chart to see how much more energy incandescent bulbs use than CFLs.

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and should be used and disposed of properly, ideally recycled. The amount of mercury is 100 times less than the amount used in older thermometers.

Screw and unscrew the CFL by its base and don't forcefully twist the CFL into a light socket. Dispose of used or broken CFLs inside two sealed plastic bags. For detailed cleaning instructions for broken CFLs refer to www.energystar.gov.

Unbroken used CFLs can be recycled at participating Home Depot stores. It is best to call ahead to ask whether a particular store is offering the recycling program.

You can also purchase recycling kits called RECYCLEPAK® containers online at www.prepaidrecycling.com. The consumer kits, which can recycle 6 to 12 CFLs depending on size, are for residential use only. Each kit costs $22.95, which includes shipping and recycling fees.

I bought a new energy bulb but for some reason when I use my TV EARS to listen to the TV ... it seems to interfere with the hearing unit. It makes a ' static type sound. My lamp is next to my chair, ( I also read there ) so i gave up on having it . Just thought I'd let you know. Rusty

Hi Rusty, Thank you for your comment. I have asked a staff person at Hawaiian Electric for information about your problem. He has advised me that the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has given the CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) industry permission to operate CFLs in a very specific frequency bandwidth in both the IR (infrared) and operating harmonic resonance frequencies. It is his understanding that the TV Ears manufacturer realized that the product line was having an interference problem and has since changed its product. He also provided me with the following TV Ears product descriptions: TV Ears Original Wireless Headset System, the "original" with 95 KHz technology, is not only great for TV but can also be used in theatres equipped with 95KHz Voice Enhancement Technology™. The product has a reception coverage up to 900 sq. ft. and comes with a 1-year warranty. TV Ears 2.3 MHz Wireless Headset System - This 2.3 MHz wireless headset system is ideal for watching TV. The product has a reception coverage up to 600 sq. ft and comes with a 90-day warranty. The product information says you can listen to TV at your own level, without disturbing others. I hope that helps. Best regards, Janet

Attempting to reduce my electric needs, I bought CFL's for every lamp in the house. I was surprised when two of them burned out within 3 months. I had an electrician check every lamp and found no problems. I was further surprised when the electrician informed me that CFL's contain mercury. Wouldn't this be dangerous if one was broken?

Hi John, Congratulations on making the switch to CFLs! I am sorry you had a problem with two of them burning out. Make sure you match the type of CFL to the fixture; not all CFLs can be used in enclosed fixtures or in wet locations. To avoid shortening a CFL’s life, use it in a fixture that is on for at least 15 to 20 minutes at a time. We also recommend purchasing quality CFLs, those with the UL® listing mark and ENERGYSTAR® logo. You are correct about CFLs containing a small amount of mercury, which is about 100 times less than what was used in older thermometers. The ENERGYSTAR website, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has information on CFLs, the mercury they contain, how to dispose of CFLs, and how to clean up a CFL that has been broken. For details go to: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls_mercury. Best regards, Janet
