If you are planning to purchase home electronics, take the time to select models that bear the ENERGY STAR® label. The label appears on products that meet strict energy efficiency criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Home electronics use energy when they are turned off to power features like clock displays and remote controls. Electronic products that have earned the ENERGY STAR use less electricity to perform these functions, while providing the same performance and features as conventional models.
The average home has two TVs, three telephones, and a DVD player. If these items were replaced with ENERGY STAR-qualified models, it would save over 25 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to that of more than 2 million cars.
Look for the ENERGY STAR on the following home electronics:
- Home audio equipment
- Televisions
- TV set-top boxes (cable, satellite, or IP devices)
- DVD players
- TV/VCR and TV/DVD combination units
- Digital-to-analog converter boxes
- Cordless phones and answering machines
- External power adapters/power supplies
- Battery charging units
