Halogen bulbs operate at very high temperatures. They are often used in torchiere lamps, which are designed to direct the bulb’s light directly toward the ceiling. To avoid the risk of fire, we recommend the following precautions when using a halogen torchiere lamp.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions and warnings, including specifications for style and wattage of replacement bulbs.
- Never hang clothing or towels on top of a torchiere lamp.
- Don’t place a torchiere lamp near an open window with curtains, as the wind could blow the curtains onto the halogen bulb.
- Also don’t place a torchiere lamp near a bunk bed, where the bedding could come too close to the halogen bulb.
- Avoid using torchiere lamps in children’s bedrooms and playrooms or in areas where they may be tipped over by children or pets.
- Turn off or unplug the lamp before removing or replacing the halogen bulb. Make sure the bulb is cool before handling it or discarding it.
- Do not leave high-wattage (more then 100 watts) halogen lamps on when you leave the room or when you are not at home.
- Consider replacing the halogen lamp with a lamp that can use a compact fluorescent lightbulb to reduce the risk of fire and reduce electricity costs.
