HELP ME WITH RATINGS

During the summer, you may be motivated to get some additional yard work done. Take a few minutes to think about your safety when using electrical tools outdoors.

  • Power TipsMake sure your outdoor outlet is equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This type of outlet will automatically disconnect power when an electrical tool plugged into it comes in contact with water or experiences a leak of electricity to the ground, referred to as a ground fault.

  • Purchase electrically operated tools with the double insulation Class II symbol. Double-insulated tools protect the user from accidental short circuits.

  • If using an extension cord outside of the home, only use a weather-resistant, heavy-gauge extension cord labeled for outdoor use, with an amperage rating that is higher than that of the tool plugged into it.

  • Examine extension cords and electrical tools before each use and repair or replace them if damaged.

  • Keep the extension cord or power tool cord out of your work area or path.

  • Don’t leave an electrical tool unattended while it is plugged in. Put the tool where no curious child or unqualified adult can misuse it.

  • Turn off, lock, and unplug a tool before carrying it to another location or before connecting attachments, such as mower baskets or saw blades.

  • If an electrical tool falls into a pool or pond, unplug it before you reach into the water to retrieve it.

  • When trimming tree branches keep your ladder, tools, and yourself at least ten feet away from overhead power lines. Also make sure the branch you are working on will not accidentally come in contact with a power line.

  • Safely store tools like lawn mowers and trimmers indoors.
