Tattoos in Hawaii?

HELP ME WITH RATINGS

One of the great things about tattoos in Hawaii is the variety. Not only do we have the beautiful Polynesian influence but we also have Asian and Western images in abundance. Working in our studio it is always exciting to work with our clients and find just the right image for their 'skin story.'

Fun floral
Fun floral that was a take off on an old traditional design

Today's clients come in with much of their homework done... they have a pretty good idea of what they want to represent. It can hold deep meaning... often our Polynesian clients want to show their heritage through their aumakua or other representation of their ancestors.

Asian heritage
Representing Asian heritage.

Sometimes it's an image that simply appeals to the client and they have taken time to tweek it to make it their own.

Pretty things for pretty ladies

And sometimes there is a story we just aren't privy too behind those tattoos!

there's a story there
Done on a nurse in Chicago... there's a story here!

This month's column is devoted to those who are thinking... pondering... is a tattoo right for me and what tattoo would that be? Take your time, do your homework. Hopefully through my columns I've given you plenty to ponder and quality questions to ask of your tattooer. Choose wisely--professional tattooers in quality studios ONLY!

Until next month... happy ink!

I am a Health Researcher and a Professional Photographer, what I found out is that the ink that is used for tattoos has the highest level of lead of any ink on the planet which will penetrate through your skin and damage all of your organs. If you care about your health you should avoid absorbing this extremely toxic substance into your body. Also puncturing the skin so many times welcomes infections of all types. As a photographer, they start off very colorful and end up looking like dull dark green bruises. They are a really bad idea that most people regret doing later in life. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, not even pets!

As a 30 year tattoo veteran, health instructor for the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, lecturer and columnist on tattoo safety I beg to differ with you. Would you please list your resources for your 'research' about the pigments and dispersing agents that you claim have high levels of lead? The companies we purchase our pigments from are highly reputable and we have had their products assayed by independent labs (Dupont for one) with NO SUCH problem of lead or any other contaminants. I personally have tattoos 30 years old which are as brilliant as the day I got them. I know thousands of people who enjoy body art and wear it safely. Could it be you just don't agree with tattooing in general? As we say in the business, tattoos aren't for everyone.

From a prior column I wrote on SAFETY in TATTOOING: "For a very cool comprehensive list of pigments and their origins check out http://www.about.com/chemistry/tattoo pigments. It's an excellent article that is very comprehensive"

Think before you get a tatoo. I know folks who are regretting getting tatoos. A prospective employer may not look at your tatoo with admiration.
