Shopping For a New Appliance?

HELP ME WITH RATINGS

If you’re planning on purchasing a large appliance, take the time to select a model that is energy efficient. Look for EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR labels.

EnergyGuide label
The Federal Trade Commission requires EnergyGuide labels on all new electric water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, and air conditioners. The labels allow you to compare estimated annual operating costs among comparable models and select the most efficient appliance for your money.

ENERGY STAR label
ENERGY STAR labels appear on appliances that meet strict energy efficiency criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The ENERGY STAR program includes the following large appliances: clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, heat pump water heaters, and air conditioners. While their purchase price may be slightly higher than standard models, the money you save on your utility bills will easily make up for the extra cost.

When purchasing a new electric appliance, be sure to read the manufacturer’s recommendations for safe operation. Clothes washers and dishwashers that economize on water may also have particular recommendations regarding detergents.

For details on ENERGY STAR-qualified products, go to www.energystar.gov.

Thiis is really good information. The problem is that a lot of folks from the continental US that manage properties in Hawaii just don't get it. We need to conserve far more because we don't have cheap hydro power to waste-- every watt of energy used consumes valuable resources.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, the abundant hydropower available on the mainland is one of the reasons why electricity is less expensive there. We all need to make wise decisions about our energy use, which will not only help the environment but will help save us money. Janet Crawford Hawaiian Electric Company
