Just the other day I was working with a client and noticed, to my horror, that they were manually creating a table of contents (TOC) in their 100+ page document. Ouch!
I asked how they dealt with making changes and started feeling really bad for them as I saw the eyes roll. What a hassle! Insert just one stinkin' paragraph in your document causing repagination, and now you have to look at every TOC line and make sure it points to the right page.
Oooh... that's gotta hurt.
Of course, there's a better way. Just let Word automatically generate the TOC for you. For this, you just need to do two things: 1) Use Headings throughout your document and then 2) Insert your TOC where you want it.
It's super-dee-duper easy to do. Just watch the video, or you can use Word's online help (F1) and search for "Table of Contents".
