YouTube.com is one of the hottest sites online now. It lets users view and share videos, most of which are amateur recordings. YouTube came out of nowhere in November of last year and has rocketed to become the 44th busiest site according to Alexa.com.
So what's the big deal? Well, I'm not precisely sure, but I do visit the site on a daily basis to see "what's on". Think of it as real Reality TV meets the Web meets video on demand. I watched the 2004 Pipeline Masters, insane car crashes in a Russian tunnel, and an amazing video of a Honda commercial that never made it to the States.
I think this site is worth checking out for a few reasons. First, you can upload your own videos and share them with friends and family. Second, you can search through videos that others have created. Finally, what's appealing about it (to me, anyway) is that for the first time, you can search through mountains of video and play what you like. This site draws me back time after time and I find myself searching around for content that I just can't find anywhere else. I was also happily surprised that YouTube is reasonably free of sexually inappropriate content.
Give it a try. Now that you've got that High Speed Online connection, YouTube.com is a must-see. I think it represents what might be the future of TV.
