It is the New Year, a time when some folks reflect and commit to take better care of their minds and bodies. I am one of those people who are trying to enjoy foods without the stress of thinking about gaining weight.
The knee replacement threw me a curve ball and my health and mood have suffered. I will not give in to feeling sorry for my chubby self.
I decided to change my relationship with food. Instead of looking at food as the enemy, I surrendered to the health benefits and comfort of good foods. I was listening to some self help tapes in my car and Marianne Williamson said it is important to develop a love affair with food. I was thinking that did not make sense. I listened to another tape and could clearly see how I might benefit by some small changes.
So for the New Year, I am eating what foods appeal to me and enjoying some healthy choices because I want to feel good and be strong. I also want to be able to see my shoes when I look down and tie my own shoelaces without unzipping my pants as I bend over.
This is a simple recipe for ‘feel good eating’. Use your fancy dishes and glass wear, no paper plates or cups. Get a nice cloth napkin and set your table like you might for a special dinner. Make every meal special and relax and savor your food as you eat. No eating in front of the TV or computer.
Dining is a lost art. Eat on your lanai as if you were at a resort. It is all about feeling good and tasting your food… no hurrying.
My first special meal consisted of a homemade pretzel, pistachio butter, olives, cheese, white wine, mandarin orange marmalade and crab cakes. These foods may not go together, but I pampered myself and ate slowly. I found that I ate less and without guilt. I try to eat my meals with mindfulness and intention. I say a prayer for good health and breathe. Perhaps this is a recipe for calmness and good health too.

Each day I am more aware of what foods I consume and learn to like myself as I am. The more I accept me without making judgments, the more I feel like eating to take care of my body. Whatever you decide to do to make yourself feel better is your choice. I would love to hear from our readers if you want to take this journey back to health with me.
Thank you for reading my column and spread the Aloha Spirit through food where ever you are. Happy New Year! Bon Appetite!
