Most of us make New Years resolutions, and I would say one of the most popular is, “I’m going to: get in shape, be healthy, or lose weight!” Then, after that comes a vigorous one month of working out, eating vegetables and salads, and then…nothing! While we all have great intentions, most of us never really fulfill our new year’s resolutions, whether its work, family, not enough time, or you just don’t really know where to start. Well, I have a few tips to keep those resolutions a reality.
First, get the help you need! While losing weight and getting in shape seems a relatively easy idea, if you don’t have guidance or help from someone who knows a thing or two about it, you probably won’t succeed.
Most people that come into my gym have the drive; they just don’t really know where to start. Ideally a personal trainer is the way to go, but with finances tight, not everyone can afford it. I personally believe that one-on-one training is the best way to kick start your fitness goals. This is why I decided to offer personal training at my gyms at really affordable rates for the first of the year. I also believe that when you join a gym you should have a free consultation to assess your goals and fitness level. The number one reason people stop going to the gym or discontinue a work-out program is because they don’t have definite, attainable and measurable goals. They also don’t have someone there to consistently motivate them and chart their progress. Having someone to consult you, give you a workout schedule and goals, and educate you a little on how your body works is the best way to the road to success.
Another great tip is to partner up with someone who has a similar goal as you. This way you can motivate your partner and visa versa. It’s a lot harder to pass up going to the gym when you know your friend is there waiting for you. You don’t want to let them down and in turn you’re not letting yourself down as well. Having a partner or group of people to workout with is also a great way to drive you to the next level. You can support, inspire and even challenge each other to push yourself much further. Make sure you choose a workout partner that will feel comfortable pushing you and has the same desire to get healthier and fit.
Writing down your goals is also one more great way to make sure you stick with it. Having a written reminder helps keep you on your path. I like to write down my goals and post them on my cork board at home, that way every time I walk by, I can see my goals. Keeping a workout journal is also a smart way to chart your progress.
I hope you will all make your New Years resolution to get in shape and live a healthier lifestyle. With these tough economic times I see so many people neglecting themselves and letting the stress take over. It is more critical than ever to exercise during times of stress. You will feel rejuvenated and the more efficiently your body works, the better you will feel. So hire a personal trainer or grab a friend, get out there, and invest in something that’s a sure investment, your health!
