'Tis the Season
The seasons are changing in the surfing world - as the North Pacific goes quiet, the competitions go from heavy waves to heavy paddling. SUP and paddleboard racing are bigger than ever. But that's not to say there's no heavy waves out there; the Billabong Pro Tahiti starts next week, located at one of the heaviest waves in the world, Teahupo'o. More »

Lulumahu Falls
Tucked away in a hidden part of Nuuanu Valley is a beautiful waterfall that few people ever see. Descending in several cascades from the high slopes of Konahuanui [the highest peak in the Koolau Mountains], it is similar in appearance, and prettier than Manoa Falls, but more difficult to reach. Also, like Manoa, its pool is too shallow for swimming, although it will provide a horizontal soak. More »

Something to Ride
Sometimes April can be really good. Last year we had a couple big swells during April and even a 10-12 ridable day at Pipe. This year in April we had lots of waves, but nothing extradordinary on the Northshore. More »

Kauai Surfer Girls Rock WQS Surf Tour
A blog is a blog is a blog. The word comes up misspelled but the idea is to write some crazy extreme mostly logical banter about what bugs ya mind! Well I am full of that lately but let's start with happy news. I feel proud to say one of our Hawaii surfer girls is on top of the WQS heap making a charge for getting on the World Tour of Surfing. Our Ocean, Land and Sky
Rated 5.0 Stars
There's a lot about Hawaii that annoys us; insane traffic, escalating crime rates, the cost of living, overcrowded everything, homelessness, rising property taxes, etc. But as far as climate and culture go, we're all so very fortunate to live here... very fortunate. More »

Tadd's First Pro Paycheck!
Rated 5.0 Stars
It wasn't exactly how Tadd Fujikawa wanted the final round of the Mid-Pacific Open golf tournament to play out. "First cut as a pro, and first win as a pro. Feeling pretty good," Fujikawa said. "Didn't really play too well today, it was a struggle. But luckily I grinded through it, made a lot of clutch puts toward the end." More »

Putting Using Crosshairs?
A teaching aide on steroids is how I'd sum up this new putter. It's out of South Korea and it's from Infinic. Infinic promises that it's golf putter, the Dixx Blu Digital Instructor, will improve your short game like no other. This putter has sensors in it that'll measure your stance and your swing. More »

Hiking in the French Alps
Six years ago, some hiking friends and I discovered HF Holidays, a British hiking club which offers walking tours in Europe at prices much cheaper than we could find anywhere else. Taking a chance, we signed up for a trip to the Austrian Alps, and have been hiking with them every year since. More »

Global Warming???
Rated 5.0 Stars
If the sewage spill we endured this summer in town wasn't enough to turn you into an environmentalist, last month in Hawaii would have definitely raised a few questions about global warming. Basically, where are our waves? I heard through the grapevine that it was the slowest November on record for the North shore in 60 years. In fact, it was definitely the slowest one I've ever seen in my 18 years here. More »

Restart
Rated 5.0 Stars
Did you ever play a video game and start out so bad you just hit the restart button, then you did it again and again and again until you finally got a good rhythm going in the game? I was earnestly seeking that red button all winter; as each month came I thought, this will be it, this will be the month where it really turns on, but it really just never happened. More »

Kalauao Stream and Waterfall
Last month's column featured Hamama Falls, which is easy to reach, but requires permission from the Board of Water Supply to access. This month, I describe another waterfall hike, which requires no permissions, but takes a little more effort. At four miles round trip, it is reasonably short, so it could be done as a half-day excursion. More »

Trail Blazers: Ishii, Woods and Wie
Some people just see more possibilities in life than the rest of us. There is a cute phrase for it, usually used in business. It's called "thinking outside the box". "The box" is the world, life, as we know it from our parents or society. More »

Waimea Falls Stream Loop
Visitors to Waimea Valley Audubon Center on the north shore of Oahu are familiar with the beautiful waterfall and pool that lie at the upper end of the botanical park. But very few people have ever gone farther into the valley, following the stream that feeds the falls. More »

New Year's Koko Crater Climb - Revisited
Every year on New Year's Day, the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club climbs Koko Crater from a route near the Halona Blow Hole. Since I've been travelling most of December, I have chosen this special hike to be reprinted for my January column. Watch for a new column from me on February 1st. More »

Ripped Strategy - Neal and the 2006 Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic
I don't want to trivialize these terrible things, but we've been slammed with so much lousy news, I thought I'd look back at an amusing anecdote of mine. Sometimes you just need to get back to the source - the pure act of waveriding. More »

Stand Up and Paddle
Rated 4.0 Stars
Bobby Achoy's hand feels like a rusty steel mitt as I grip it in the classic Hawaiian handshake. The famous Waikiki beachboy has put more miles on his hands than any waterman I have ever met, whether wrapped around a canoe paddle or from greeting the countless tourists he has squired around the gentle rollers of Waikiki Beach.
