Leilehua's Mason to Stage Two Q School
Rated 5.0 Stars
Hawaii's Leilehua grad and UH-Hilo graduate Nick Mason did. And he did it in style. He finished #1, medalist, in McKinney, Texas at one of the overflow courses. That's how many guys tried their way through Q-School at $4,000 just to get your entry form in. More »

Stewards of South Maui
Rated 5.0 Stars
If you've ever driven around or flown over South Maui you're familiar with the vast, wind swept beauty on display from McGregor Point out to Cape Kinau. With Haleakala reaching towards the heavens in the east and the West Maui mountain range framing this mighty vista, it always draws plenty of oohs and aahs from those lucky enough to see it. More »

KimKim Faces "Hell" at St. Andrews
Rated 5.0 Stars
Hawaii's Kimberly Kim ended up in the middle of the "Hell Bunker" as it's called in St. Andrews on the Old Course. It was Day Two of the Curtis Cup. The U.S. team held a slim lead over the Great Britain and Ireland team. More »

Kalauao Stream and Waterfall
Last month's column featured Hamama Falls, which is easy to reach, but requires permission from the Board of Water Supply to access. This month, I describe another waterfall hike, which requires no permissions, but takes a little more effort. At four miles round trip, it is reasonably short, so it could be done as a half-day excursion. More »

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Rated 5.0 Stars
There is a Hawaii we know. Right now we are still struggling to get it back. The good news is that there were some kind of ridable waves almost everyday this month on the Northshore. They weren't great waves, but they were waves. More »

Three Hawaii Teens Make All American First String
Rated 5.0 Stars
Four 2006 Rolex Junior All-America First Team selections made a return appearance, including Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., who was ranked No. 1 in the Polo Golf Rankings at the end of the 2007 season. She put together a season that included eight top-10 finishes and three AJGA victories. More »

Hapapa - Steep Hike, Great Views
Rated 5.0 Stars
Hapapa is a fine, short outing in the Waianae Mountains that is little known and rarely hiked, primarily because of its out of the way location. Because the trail head  is on Schofield Barracks, it requires a visitor pass or vehicle with a military sticker, plus a photo ID, to enter the base. In addition, permission must be obtained by writing to Commander, US Army Garrison Hawaii, Schofield Barracks, HI 96857, (Attn: APVG-GWY-O). More »

Shark! (Part II) ... Shark Tourism in Hawaii
Rated 5.0 Stars
When the waves get over 8' on the North Shore, I surf Puaena Point. It's a D-list spot that for some bathymetric reason, tames down swell size so that aged geezers like me can still hit the surf without drowning. PP sits on the north edge of the Haleiwa Boat Harbor channel and the wave breaks right along it. So, when you're sitting in the lineup between sets, you see every imaginable type of ocean craft going out and coming in. More »

Tadd Rewrites PGA Tour History
Rated 4.5 Stars
It's been one history making victory after another in Hawaii over the past 12 months.  Hawaii has two Hawaii born and raised players on the PGA Tour in Parker McLachlin and Dean Wilson. Wilson is the first Hawaii player in 16 years to win on the PGA Tour. Kimberly Kim is the youngest player ever to win the U.S. Women's Amateur. Tadd Fujikawa became the youngest player in the U.S Open and the youngest player in 50 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event, right here at the 2007 Sony Open in Hawaii. More »

Maui No Ka Oi
As much as all of us sports fans love college football, November means one big thing in Hawaii - the start of the college basketball season. From the Stan Sheriff Arena to McCabe Gym and the Blaisdell to the Cannon Activities Center and the Hilo Civic Center, Hawaii's top WAC and PacWest teams are ready to tip it off. More »

Gentlemen, Tee it Up
The 2006 golf season starts in Hawaii and will for the foreseeable future. One of the big announcements from the PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is a shorter golf season, with a heated finale in September and a final few weeks to determine who gets to stay in the elite PGA Tour for the players who are facing being culled from the ranks of the top 125 money winners. All of this doesn't mean much to the average fan unless one of your favorites is facing the cut, like Hawaii's Dean Wilson so often in the past few years has. More »
