Tadd's First Pro Paycheck!
Rated 5.0 Stars
It wasn't exactly how Tadd Fujikawa wanted the final round of the Mid-Pacific Open golf tournament to play out. "First cut as a pro, and first win as a pro. Feeling pretty good," Fujikawa said. "Didn't really play too well today, it was a struggle. But luckily I grinded through it, made a lot of clutch puts toward the end." More »

Lulumahu Falls
Tucked away in a hidden part of Nuuanu Valley is a beautiful waterfall that few people ever see. Descending in several cascades from the high slopes of Konahuanui [the highest peak in the Koolau Mountains], it is similar in appearance, and prettier than Manoa Falls, but more difficult to reach. Also, like Manoa, its pool is too shallow for swimming, although it will provide a horizontal soak. More »

Putting Using Crosshairs?
A teaching aide on steroids is how I'd sum up this new putter. It's out of South Korea and it's from Infinic. Infinic promises that it's golf putter, the Dixx Blu Digital Instructor, will improve your short game like no other. This putter has sensors in it that'll measure your stance and your swing. More »

The Tadd Fujikawa Train Just Keeps Going and Going...
Rated 5.0 Stars
Tadd Fujikawa had already wowed the national and international audience with his fantastic ability to be graceful, cheerful and inspiring while becoming the youngest golfer in 50 years to make the cut at a PGA Tour event at the 2007 Sony Open in Hawaii. Then he floored that same audience by finishing the event close to the top of the leaderboard. Following that major feat, this past February 11th, Fujikawa shows the same cheerful tenacity and this time he wins the 29th Hawaii Pearl Open. More »

Wilson and McLachlin - These Guys Are Good
Rated 4.0 Stars
Hawaii has two golf professionals on the PGA Tour. Parker McLachlin shot a final round 71 of the 2007 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament and earned his 2007 PGA Tour card by finishing in a tie for 16th. More »

Even Tigers Tire!
The Mercedes Championship will be minus another major star, maybe the major star on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods says "I haven't had an off season, and I need one." More »

Home Grown Wilson At Mercedes Benz Championship
The PGA Tour season ended the last week of October with the Tour Championship. Only 27 players in the field of Champions from the 2006 season played. Hawaii's Dean Wilson was one of them. When the season begins in January of 2007 with the Mercedes Benz Championship, Wilson will be there too. More »

The Lycian Way
As is my usual practice, I like to start out the new year with a hiking tour outside of Hawaii. This year I am going farther afield than before, with a trip to Turkey, walking parts of the Lycian Way, a UN World Heritage hiking trail. More »

Oneawa Hills
Oneawa Hills is the name of the roughly 5-mile-long ridge which separates Kailua from Kaneohe just south of the Marine base. The ridge undulates in a series of small hills, the highest of which is 942 feet. From most places on the ridge, there are fine views of Kaneohe Bay to the west, Kawainui Marsh to the east, and the high summit of the Koolau to the south. More »

Wie, the King and Honor
It's tempting to focus on Michelle Wie at the Fields Open but the meat of my newsletter focuses on the 2006 Hawaii Pearl Open at the Pearl Country Club. It's one of those behind the scenes stories that tells more about the game of golf and the people who play it. It's about honor. More »

Malaekahana Pool and Falls
Rated 5.0 Stars
Most hikers feel that this trip is a long way to go to see two waterfalls and a relatively small pool. I have to agree with them, but it doesn't stop me from making this hike once a year or so to enjoy a walk deep into the foothills of the Koolau Mountains, ending at a spot that few folks ever see. Hawaii Notes October
The first two weeks of October was so lagging, no surf on north or south shores; it seemed like dejavue from last year. Then I read on Pat Caldwells surf report that this would be a La Nina season which means smaller than average surf and slim chance of giant surf episodes. More »

Stand Up and Paddle
Rated 4.0 Stars
Bobby Achoy's hand feels like a rusty steel mitt as I grip it in the classic Hawaiian handshake. The famous Waikiki beachboy has put more miles on his hands than any waterman I have ever met, whether wrapped around a canoe paddle or from greeting the countless tourists he has squired around the gentle rollers of Waikiki Beach. Summer Soltice
It certainly is Summer. As yesterday marked the first day of summer, the waves this past week have confirmed it. Small almost non existent surf on both sides of the island. More »

Global Warming???
Rated 5.0 Stars
If the sewage spill we endured this summer in town wasn't enough to turn you into an environmentalist, last month in Hawaii would have definitely raised a few questions about global warming. Basically, where are our waves? I heard through the grapevine that it was the slowest November on record for the North shore in 60 years. In fact, it was definitely the slowest one I've ever seen in my 18 years here. More »

Restart
Rated 5.0 Stars
Did you ever play a video game and start out so bad you just hit the restart button, then you did it again and again and again until you finally got a good rhythm going in the game? I was earnestly seeking that red button all winter; as each month came I thought, this will be it, this will be the month where it really turns on, but it really just never happened. More »
