Tadd Fujikawa Wins the Maui Kahili Open
Rated 5.0 Stars
The weather was perfect for the 2009 Kahili Maui Open the first weekend in June. It was hot but at least the tradewinds were blowing to 25 mph. The field was excellent, considering the cost of traveling these days. The professional and top amateur players all showed the folks at the Kamehameha Golf Club and the Kalihi course how much they appreciate the effort it takes to put on a quality event. More »

Lulumahu Falls
Rated 5.0 Stars
Tucked away in a hidden part of Nuuanu Valley is a beautiful waterfall that few people ever see. Descending in several cascades from the high slopes of Konahuanui [the highest peak in the Koolau Mountains], it is similar in appearance, and prettier than Manoa Falls, but more difficult to reach. Also, like Manoa, its pool is too shallow for swimming, although it will provide a horizontal soak. More »

New Year's Koko Crater Climb - Revisited
Every year on New Year's Day, the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club climbs Koko Crater from a route near the Halona Blow Hole. Since I've been travelling most of December, I have chosen this special hike to be reprinted for my January column. Watch for a new column from me on February 1st. More »

Kamiloiki Ridge
Kamiloiki is a fine ridge hike in East Oahu. The trail begins at the Pahua Heiau, just off Makahuena Place in Hawaii Kai, and ascends to the Koolau summit overlooking Waimanalo at an elevation of about 1,400 feet. It follows an open ridge with little shade, although it enters an ironwood forest just before the final climb to the summit. More »

"60 Minutes" Twice
For the second time in as many years, Michelle Wie was back on CBS's "60 Minutes" filmed in part in Hawaii at the Fields Open. Two years ago it was Mom, Dad and Michelle. Today she has a marketing agency, style consultant, mental coach, physical trainer and swing coach, just to name a few, on her "team". Wie told correspondent Steve Kroft that "it feels nice to have people that you can trust around you." More »

Kalauao Stream and Waterfall
Last month's column featured Hamama Falls, which is easy to reach, but requires permission from the Board of Water Supply to access. This month, I describe another waterfall hike, which requires no permissions, but takes a little more effort. At four miles round trip, it is reasonably short, so it could be done as a half-day excursion. More »

Wilson's Hot Million - Wie DQ's
Rated 5.0 Stars
Dean Wilson may have had a slow start in 2008 but his bank account is beginning to show what a true grinder can accomplish when he takes advantage of the moment he gets his game back. As of the John Deere Classic, Wilson had $996,666 in official money won in the 22 events he entered so far this year. He hasn't won any, but he's keeping his eye on the prize. At the John Deere, Wilson knew he had his work cut out for him after Friday play. More »

Parker Ranks 45th PGA Tour Money List
Rated 5.0 Stars
Waikoloa's Parker McLachlin is doing exactly what he did last year - starting off strong! In just three starts in his 2008 season, McLachlin has earned $233,955, ranks 45th on the PGA Tour's official money list and he has 1,059 FedEx Cup points. He's 46th in the FedEx Cup point standing. If he keeps this up, he won't have any problems keeping this PGA Tour card and he'll be invited into all the limited field events. More »

Kuliouou Ridge Trail
Kuliouou is a fine hike leading from the suburbs of East Honolulu to the Koolau summit. Along the way it passes through several types of forest, starting with mixed secondary growth, followed by ironwoods, then Cook pine, and finally, near the summit, an almost native forest of ohia and lama trees. That makes the route shady, opening up only after reaching the final approach to the summit. More »

Trail Blazers: Ishii, Woods and Wie
Some people just see more possibilities in life than the rest of us. There is a cute phrase for it, usually used in business. It's called "thinking outside the box". "The box" is the world, life, as we know it from our parents or society. More »

Surfing Into Summer
We are certainly Surfing Into Summer here at the end of May. The weather has gone from being kinda cold for Hawaii to hot. I always know when it gets hot because my Tasmainian husband joins my dog on the floor next to the AC. We had some really bad vog this month and it is really oppressive giving people asthma, hives, headaches joint pain and even nausea. More »

Turbulence at Turtle Bay
On March 17, 2007, about 200 people representing various local groups gathered in a peaceful demonstration at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. The loose coalition was unified by the collective concern for an upcoming development by Kuilima Resort Company, an affiliate of Oaktree Capital Management, LLC (a self-proclaimed "vulture capital" company). July On the Fly
I would say it was probably better than the typical Hawaiian July, but thats not saying much. I left on a two week trip at the beginning of the month stressing hard that I was going to miss out on the best swell of the summer. It did get pretty good a couple of days, I heard, really nice clean perfect down, but as usual it was not the Hawaiian 6 foot surf predictions they had been hyping for nearly three weeks. More »

El Nino, La Nina, Mucho Confuso!
Amongst the Earth's most broad and influential natural climatic events are the El Nino and La Nina conditions in the Pacific. Everyone's heard of them, but we're not at all exactly sure what they are and how they affect the weather directly over our heads in Hawaii. More »
