The Humana Challenge? Pumping Vitality into "The Hope"
It was officially the Bob Hope Classic but everyone called it "The Hope". Bob Hope's last name is what he came to embody in the minds of many. In his work and his life he gave people "hope". Bob Hope put his name on the PGA Tour Desert Classic in 1965. Hope loved the game. He had a golf course on his property in Taluca Lake. More »

Eric Dugas Wins Again
Rated 5.0 Stars
It's been the summer of success for 28-year-old Eric Dugas. Who? Eric Dugas. He grew up on the East Coast but he's been in Hawaii. Winning golf tournaments. He's become a regular in my column, in case you hadn't noticed. Eric is quite the "baller" - as they are wont to say on Golf Channel... More »

Kaunala Loop & Pu`u O Mahuka Heiau
Located at the very end of Pupukea Road on the North Shore, Kaunala Trail does not get much use, except by folks who live nearby. That's a shame, because it is an ideal path through a mixed forest, traversing gulches, ridges, and affording sweeping views. More »

Hayashi - POY Proves He "Da Best"
Rated 5.0 Stars
It used to be that the Player of the Year automatically got an exemption into the Sony Open in Hawaii field of 144 players, the first full field event of the PGA Tour season. But a little negotiating between the PGA of America and the PGA Tour eliminated several spots for members of the PGA of America in favor of PGA Tour players. More »

Oops Wie Did It Again
Rated 5.0 Stars
You may say we spend an awful lot of time on Michelle Wie. She has only won one LPGA Tournament. But winning has never been a prerequisite for the masses to be enamored with the young woman of Korean heritage from Hawaii. Even before she turned into a 6-foot tall, super-model gorgeous, artistic young lady with a great sense of humor. More »

Wie...First Stage Liftoff
Rated 5.0 Stars
Her parents watching intently, the temperature rising to 100 degrees and Michelle Wie looked cool and relaxed with her caddy by her side. It's the LPGA Q School, short for QUALIFYING school, something no one in the Wie circle expected her to have to go through. But as B.J. Wie told reporters earlier this year, "we've run out of options." More »

Kahana Valley - Pools and Streams
Rated 4.0 Stars
Kahana is one of the best places I know of to enjoy a hike in a typical Hawaiian forested valley. The valley is beautiful, the forest is shady and varied, and clear, cool pools offer refreshing dips along the way. It is the perfect place to take a visiting hiker who has never seen Oahu's hidden interior. Children will enjoy this outing, although younger ones should be under adult control at pools, when crossing streams, and on some narrow sections of the trail. More »

Make Me Care!
Rated 5.0 Stars
Who comes to mind when you think of the top attention getters in the game of golf? I'll throw out four names. Michelle Wie, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and John Daly. Daly's been struggling for years. But his fans don't care. They just love John. Warts and all. More »

Wa`ahila Ridge - Easy and Beautiful
Periodically, in the three years that I have been writing this column, folks email me to ask if I know of an easy hike, near town, that still affords a forest experience and scenic views. More »

Wie and Fujikawa Make History
It was the talk of the town, the state, the Internet, the golf community around the world. Would Michelle Wie become the first woman to qualify to play in the U.S. Men's Open. It is considered one of the most difficult events to win much less to qualify for. Wie already made history in Hawaii on May 15, 2006 when she became the first woman to win a local qualifier that led to her playing in the sectional qualifier to get into the main event. More »

Malama i ka Wai
Rated 5.0 Stars
I recently visited a neighborhood hardware store to buy some home improvement stuff and when I got home, I found some pretty cool informational cards that the cashier had thrown in the bag with my purchases. "Protect Our Water - Malama I Ka Wai", the headings all said, so I was immediately interested in reading them. They were created by the Hawaii State Department of Transportation (DOT) and included tips on how commercial businesses and homeowners can kokua. More »

Moments of Glory
Rated 5.0 Stars
While it's no typical Hawaiian Winter by any means, January 2007 had some moments of glory. We had some fun surf New Years Day but a lot of hype over the next swell had everyone waiting for the Eddie on Jan 2. It was said to only have been 8 feet at Waimea that morning while Pipe was a perfect 10-12 but rising rapidly and totally out of control by midday, and then some sizable Waimea by late afternoon. The Bay broke a couple more half days, but that was about it and the conditions weren't too good for it either. More »

Back to the Future with Shaun Tomson
January 1973; I'm thirteen years old, standing on the beach soaking wet, shivering, and overcome with a strange but euphoric new feeling. I've ridden my first waves and a lifelong passion for surfing and the ocean begins. More »

Where Did Bodyboarding Go?
In 1971, Tom Morey took an electric knife and a clothes iron to some polyethylene foam and created the first bodyboard. He called his invention the "Morey Boogie," started selling them, and sales soon skyrocketed (note: a boogie board is the old-timers' name of a bodyboard; there is no distinction between the two). It became so popular in fact, that at one point, bodyboards were purportedly outselling surfboards in surf shops at a rate of six to one. More »

Clean Body, Clean Ocean
They're at the beach every day. Surfers, swimmers, and paddlers come out of the ocean after a solid workout, quickly make their way up the beach, and take a cleansing shower. Many times they're rushing straight off to work or to some other social commitment. Pressed for time, they can't afford the quick stop at home for a proper bath and change of clothes. More »
