Hawaii's Leilehua grad and UH-Hilo graduate Nick Mason did. And he did it in style. He finished #1, medalist, in McKinney, Texas at one of the overflow courses. That's how many guys tried their way through Q-School at $4,000 just to get your entry form in. More »

Watabu to the Masters - Leadbetter to Hawaii!
Another victory for a Hawaii born and trained golfer on the national stage. 22 year old Casey Watabu won the 81st US Amateur Public Links. It's one of the many USGA events staged every summer. Watabu defeated Anthony Kim of Traverse City, Michigan 4 and 3 at the par 72, 7,061 yard Golf Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington. It's not everyday one of our "kids" comes home the winner with an invitation to play in the Master at Augusta. More »

Hamama Falls
Rated 5.0 Stars
This easy to get to gem of a waterfall is in a restricted area, which is why most folks have never been there. It requires permission from the Board of Water Supply, which is normally granted only to hiking groups, since each hiker must sign a waiver, and the hiking club must show evidence of liability insurance. Kahana Valley - Pools and Streams
Kahana is one of the best places I know of to enjoy a hike in a typical Hawaiian forested valley. The valley is beautiful, the forest is shady and varied, and clear, cool pools offer refreshing dips along the way. It is the perfect place to take a visiting hiker who has never seen Oahu's hidden interior. Children will enjoy this outing, although younger ones should be under adult control at pools, when crossing streams, and on some narrow sections of the trail. More »

Two Cuts for Fujikawa on PGA Tour
Rated 5.0 Stars
Honda must be a lucky charm for Tadd Fujikawa. This past March, in The Honda Classic at PGA National Resort and Spa, Fujikawa made the cut. It's the first cut made by Fujikawa outside of Hawaii since turning pro. He took home over 12 thousand dollars for his T 52. After two steady 1-over-par 71, he caught a 73 but turned it all around on Sunday shooting a 69. More »

The Tadd Fujikawa Train Just Keeps Going and Going...
Rated 5.0 Stars
Tadd Fujikawa had already wowed the national and international audience with his fantastic ability to be graceful, cheerful and inspiring while becoming the youngest golfer in 50 years to make the cut at a PGA Tour event at the 2007 Sony Open in Hawaii. Then he floored that same audience by finishing the event close to the top of the leaderboard. Following that major feat, this past February 11th, Fujikawa shows the same cheerful tenacity and this time he wins the 29th Hawaii Pearl Open. More »

One Man's Junk is Another Man's Cause
On June 1st, 2008, and with relatively little fanfare, two intrepid men, Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal, set sail from Long Beach on a voyage from California to Hawaii. Utilizing the fuselage of a Cessna airplane as their cabin, salvaged masting materials, lashing, nets, and 15,000 plastic bottles donated by local high schools and a recycling center, the two sailors and some volunteers designed and fabricated within 3 months, a minimalized 30' pontooned craft they christened "Junk Raft"... Brown Out
Like a lot of surfers in Hawaii, I'm constantly monitoring internet wave models to track swell generating low pressure systems in the north and south pacific to see when, how big, and from what direction the waves will be hitting our reefs. Equally important is checking local weather forecasts to see what near shore conditions such as tides and wind speed and direction would be doing when a swell finally did arrive. More »

Hana Hou
Bonus Month of surf for both North and South shores. The North shore had little waves trickling in through the first half of the month, but it wasn't over until the fat barrels sung one more tune. On June 11th the North shore saw 6 foot sets by evening and then the next day proceeded with solid 6-8 ft consistent surf. More »

Growing Old, Acting Young
This past year, my loving wife threw me a Yakudoshi party, a traditional Japanese celebration of a man's 41st birthday (more a local Hawaii custom nowadays). Legend has it that this is a year of danger for men, when their bodies start to show their age and change for the worse. Well, it seems that this legend may be legit. More »

Living the Dream
