Where Did Bodyboarding Go?
In 1971, Tom Morey took an electric knife and a clothes iron to some polyethylene foam and created the first bodyboard. He called his invention the "Morey Boogie," started selling them, and sales soon skyrocketed (note: a boogie board is the old-timers' name of a bodyboard; there is no distinction between the two). It became so popular in fact, that at one point, bodyboards were purportedly outselling surfboards in surf shops at a rate of six to one. More »

Stewards of South Maui
Rated 5.0 Stars
If you've ever driven around or flown over South Maui you're familiar with the vast, wind swept beauty on display from McGregor Point out to Cape Kinau. With Haleakala reaching towards the heavens in the east and the West Maui mountain range framing this mighty vista, it always draws plenty of oohs and aahs from those lucky enough to see it. More »

Hawaii Notes Feb 2008
In February, we got our waves. The month started out looking like the rest of the year with cold windy weather and flat surf. The Monster Pro and Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic was held in such small surf it seemed like there was a contest as to which Pipe contest was the worst in surfing history, the recent WQS was held from Jan 27- Feb 6 or the former Pipemasters WCT event which was held late mid December. Summer Is Here
Aloha, thanks for doing the blog tang with me! Lot's happening around town! Our Hawaii World Surf Team did a good job in France taking a bronze medal, almost getting the gold! The girls had a good start, solid wins in great surf by the way. France had a good shore break from 3 to 6 feet for the whole event so there were no lack of waves just a few waves not going all the way in. More »

VPP in da House!
Rated 4.0 Stars
Going on two consecutive winters now, the Volcom Pipe Pro has enjoyed spectacular conditions at the Banzai Pipeline, and for two consecutive winters, it has surpassed the much more publicized Billabong Pipeline Masters held in December ... at least in terms of surf conditions. More »

Record Breaking Surf
South Shores have seen record breaking months for both June and July this season. I always plan a trip during July since the surf is flat, but this year it was hard to leave. Fun 2-3 foot waves were the rule for south shores most of the month. There were one or two days with some 5 foot sets coming through, but the consistency was incredible. More »

Hurry Up and Wait: 2010 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing
Rated 4.0 Stars
Without much of a stretch, the surf conditions for 2010 winter surf season could be encapsulated in two words; "small" and "north"... However, when you have the world's hottest surfers applying their craft to the available conditions, there were plenty of exciting moments. In fact, it was rife with some downright awesome moments. Vicious Cycle
Wow, what an emotional roller coaster. We seem to be in a vicious surf cycle here in Hawaii that just wont end. We get a long lack of swell, then we get swell with onshore wind, then we might get a day or two then back to the strong trades and the small surf again. Nowhere suffers worse than Pipeline with a cycle like this since the sand keeps piling up and then gets dispersed into the wrong place time and time again. More »

Hawaii Surf Notes - September Recap
Rated 5.0 Stars
Consistent south shore surf prevailed throughout the month. Though it was nice to have such a good run of surf, surfers were bummed out that surf heights never went over 6 feet all summer and even the 6 foot waves were scarce. There was one swell that probably had a six foot wave every 2 hours and that was one of only three of those swells all summer long. More »

Growing Demand, Growing Industry, Growing Food
The worldwide demand for seafood is huge and ascending. The global seafood industry is equally massive and is a critical driver in international trade and economic well being for many countries. Seafood is the unchallenged jewel of the contemporary culinary arts, and a rich, nutritious, and accessible dietary resource for anyone who can use a fishing pole, net, or a spear. Seafood is also running out - and faster than we might think. More »
