Aloha all...
I cannot keep my mind on doing this blog thing cause the surf is up again. A swell in May and we are loving life! Surfers are ruled by the ebb and flow of the sea! So it seems girl surfers are getting a little restless because there have been no events to compete in that offer them incentive, you know some green! In interviews I have learned that it seems there are many aspiring pros that are not sponsored as well as some top rated surfers like Melanie Bartels. Hawaii needs to be supporting "Mel" big time. She is an awesome surfer who kicked up trick surfing for women long time ago. Now all the young guns are doing the tricks and pulling it off!

Aspiring pro longboard surfer Megan Godinez has been looking for sponsors for a bit. She is one of Hawaii's best longboarders and wants to go for the world title. She will be trying to qualify this August at the Roxy during The Oceanfest at Waikiki so wish her luck. Friend Godee Clark another of Oahu's best will be hanging ten there too! Good Luck girls. Practice makes perfect!

It seems that the surfing world is being more receptive to the Barbie doll image than "the big boned baby". That is a title of a song, love it! Big boned baby refers to the strong uber girl image some have. It's a battle of the ages and not much has changed for women in ocean sports but there is a small shift. Being marketable is part of the game, I don't think ya gotta have blond hair, but ya gotta carry yourself like an athlete, oh yes ya got to win something too! The Barbie image bugs me cause nobody looks like Barbie, she is just way to tall and has legs like a giraffe! Freak! I tried many years ago to get Mattel to sponsor a surf contest, Barbie doesn't surf! Hawaii's girls just got to play the game a bit better, and start very young. The market seems to be Supporting the youngest ocean athletes and the surfing associations also. Stupid Doll, she is ruining the minds of our youth. I never had a Barbie doll! No bad vibes for the pretty perfect model type girls that are good at surfing, there are some. I'll put my money on the big boned babies any day!

Onward... I spoke with surf star Rochelle Ballard and she is busy doing messages, yoga and producing her next yoga and surf video. She is retired from the WCT, retired but yes still working hard. Rochelle is considered one of the best tube riders in the world. Hailing from Kauai, Hawaii, she is well known for her promotion of Women surfers and the sport. Fellow Hawaii Pro surfer Megan Abubo is still on the World Tour and is the current 2008 Triple Crown Champion. Abubo is preparing to head to Brazil for the next leg of the tour. Good Luck Megan!

Carissa Moore Hawaii's future World Champ hopeful surfer competed in an asp men's wqs event At Trestles and it did not go to well. She lost out in her first seeded heat. But Carissa has many years ahead of her. At only 15 years of age there will be more Opportunities.

The Epic Molokai World Championship race finished up on May 18th. Hawaii's Lauren Bartlett took top women's honors in a time of 4:21:28 on a surf ski. Race conditions were not perfect but turned out better than expected with a Light trade wind kicking in and a S.E. swell running a bit.

Lauren Bartlett
Lauren was a bit reluctant to take up the challenge but in true competition style she was there. She had won the OC1 race a couple weeks prior that is the single girl outrigger race across the channel. The boats look fun to paddle give it a try! Andrea Moller from Maui was also on hand to take it on in an OC1 this go around, having missed the previous race. Andrea is a seasoned tow-in surfer and loves to paddle. She is also part of team Bradley! Her time was solid 5:19:32 just an hour behind the winner! Go girls!

Andrea Moller
You can see the race on my TV show Wahine Blue and FlHI Girlz on OC16. We are new to OC16 starting June 23rd!!! Finally shows on Women's ocean sports!
Coming up is the State Surf Championships and the Surf Into Summer events. Two important surfing contests for amateurs. Also the world team is competing in France representing Hawaii. This is out Olympics of surfing. Good luck surfers! I'll have results and pics next time!
Aloha for now!
