HELP ME WITH RATINGS
Aloha, thanks for doing the blog tang with me! Lot's happening around town! Our Hawaii World Surf Team did a good job in France taking a bronze medal, almost getting the gold! The girls had a good start, solid wins in great surf by the way. France had a good shore break from 3 to 6 feet for the whole event so there were no lack of waves just a few waves not going all the way in. The girls, Volcom's Coco Ho, Billabong's Leila Hurst, Roxy's Malia Manuel and Alessa Quizon cruised through the first rounds but just fell short a wave or two. All the girls at the contest were much improved. This is the Olympics of surfing, the ISA Championships. It is great to watch surfing live on the internet. Most events are covered live and wow what a great thing for the younger generation to watch and learn from!!! Congrats girls!

China's Wahine Classic Blessed Again! Mahalo China!

Lots of contests, it's summertime. Uncle China was able to do his 12th annual Wahine Classic at Queens and it was fly! The swell was pumping into Queens and the ladies all had a blast. Carissa Moore was the stand out surfer in the event winning the Pro Longboard division. She looked like she was really having fun trying something new by competing in longboarding as well as shortboarding. Carissa of course is a 15 year old phenom who competes against guys on a shortboard! She is like the Michelle Wie of surfing and now taking the 1000 bucks in longboarding as well. Another stand out was Candice Appleby who won the stand-up division and made the long board final in her age group too! Candice is a hard-core stand up surfer who has also fared well against the men! Look for her doing clinics in conjunction with her sponsor Tropical Blends Surf shop. She is one of the big boned babies, a girl who cherishes being a water woman! My favorite surfer in the event was Crystal Dzigas. Ms. Dzigas hung ten, pulled her fins out on one wave, spun 300 and slid back into position looking like a ballerina on crack! Well not a good choice of words but you get the picture. So smooth and so athletic. I admire her also because she shortboards as well. At the first ever Pipe contest for Women she got one of the best waves in the event.

Keep you eyes peeled on this young lady! Dax McGill who is a Volcom team rider now. Dax won two divisions and placed fourth at Surf Into Summer surfing with way older Wahines. Congrats Dax!

The Surf Into Summer event went off without a hitch. Oh and I am not going to mention the sponsors cause the site did not even have info about the females in the press... what is up with that, who wrote that. I have an excuse here. Waves were small for the final day but all in all it was great event that hosts the Amateurs. Kelia Moniz made the switch in this event from longboarding fame to winning her shortboard division. Kelia is a great surfer and likes to model as well! Anyone who can stand backwards on a longboard should never give it up though!! There has been a push for Women's longboard pro events but there are not very many that pay well so mixing it up is a good thing now a days for aspiring pro surfers.

You can see video of the events and features as well. Next month we'll cover some action at the Motocross track. I had the pleasure of meeting Mercedes Santana a 15-year-old sensation. This Wahine rides a 250 Honda like a bat out of you know what! And she likes the jumps too. Mercedes started riding at a young age with her Father and just kept it up. She now races with guys and at a recent comp at Kahuku I watched her out of the gate in second gear pulling the take to the first turn. She never looked back, way ahead. This is hard core, the ground is really hard! Mercedes has national recognition also. She qualified for nationals at a track in California. At the event she placed well on a track that was much softer than she is used to, Loretta Lynn's in Tennessee. Lynn's is actually the singer and the nationals are held on her ranch, so the name. It's difficult for her because there are no qualifications here in Hawaii and she has to travel to get into big events. At 15 she is just now embarking on a pro career and we should be supported her, big time. Congrats Mercedes keep up the exceptional work representing Hawaii! Her sponsors include Pflueger Honda, Unanimous Clothing and Fox. This girl rocks!

Jeff Hubbard put on a great event for the Keiki in Waimanalo this month. Hubbard is a World Champion in bodyboarding. The Keiki Oceanfest sponsored by Surf Sling was set up to bring ocean safety and awareness to the kids. All had a great time, especially the kids who won bodyboards!
