Setup

This setup section contains information on setting up Outlook Express 5.0 (OE5) for:

  • One user
  • Multiple users
  • Multiple users using the new Identities feature. New to OE5, Identities allow several people who share one computer to have completely separate, private e-mail boxes. This capability was not available in earlier versions of Outlook Express.

Setting up and using OE5 will be very familiar to those who have been using Outlook Express 4.0. So if you already know how to setup and use OE5 and only want information on how to use the new Identities feature, see the setting up identities section.

Setup first user

When you start Outlook Express 5.0 for the first time, an Internet Connection Wizard will prompt you to setup an e-mail account. Many of the steps used by the Wizard are the same as described here but my differ slightly.

Open Outlook Express and select Tools from the menu and then click Accounts.

From the menu, click Tools then Accounts

From the Internet Accounts window (note in this image there are no Mail accounts setup yet), click Add, then Mail.

Add e-mail account

The Internet Connection Wizard starts. Enter your name and click Next.

Enter name

Enter your E-Mail address as shown and click Next.

Enter e-mail account

Your incoming mail server is a pop3 server. Enter the name of the incoming mail server as pop-server.hawaii.rr.com, and your Outgoing mail server as smtp-server.hawaii.rr.com. Click Next.

Enter Server information

Next to account name enter your Road Runner User Name and corresponding password. THIS IS IMPORTANT: The User Name you type here will determine which e-mail account you will be retrieving mail for. If you are setting up this program to retrieve mail for your Master User e-mail address, you must type in your Master User ID (e.g. alohaj001). If you are setting up this program to retrieve mail for a Sub User e-mail address, you must type in your Sub User name and corresponding password (see the User Account Options section of this web site for help with sub user accounts).

Enter Account name and password

After finishing the connection wizard, you will see that you have just added an e-mail account to OE5. Click Close. You have just setup an e-mail account in OE5 and are ready to send and receive mail!

Optional: If you don't like the account name "pop-server" (as seen above), you can change that name by simply highlight the account name from the list above and then click on the Properties button. You will see the window below:

Enter a name that is descriptive for you (in this example Joe's Email) then click OK. Now OE5 will reference the account you've just created as "Joe's Email". This is especially helpful if you plan on setting up OE5 for use with multiple e-mail accounts because it will help you easily distinguish your various accounts.

Adding Additional E-mail Accounts

Outlook Express 5.0 allows you to setup additional e-mail accounts. But this can be done in two very distinct ways. Examples will be used to illustrate the differences.

1. Joe Aloha has two e-mail addresses; a Road Runner e-mail account and an e-mail account from work. You can setup OE5 so that e-mail from both accounts will appear in the same mailbox. This is convenient because Joe will  only need to go to one "place" to get all his mail. If this is what you want to do read on below.

2. You share your computer with your spouse and your son. All three of you have your own distinct e-mail accounts. You all want to keep your e-mail "private" so that your mail goes to its own mailbox, your spouse's mail goes in its own mailbox and so on. You can't see each other's e-mail. OE5's new Identities feature will allow you to do this. If this is what you want to do, skip the remainder of this section and go to Identities setup instead.

Adding a Second E-mail Account to same Identity

To add another e-mail account to the same identity, go to the Tools menu and select Accounts.

From the menu, click Tools then Accounts

Repeat all the steps described above substituting the appropriate information as needed. Once complete, you can see both of your e-mail accounts in the Internet Accounts window. You may add as many accounts as you choose.

If you are interested in setting up Identities, please go on to the Identities setup section.
