Setting Up External Mail for Road Runner

What is the External POP Mail server?
The External POP Mail server can be used to retrieve Road Runner mail from just about ANY Internet connected computer. Note: it's possible that some company firewalls could block access to Road Runner's External Mail Server. If you find this to be the case, you'll have to convince your company's network administrator to allow this type of access. This service is provided by Oceanic "as is."

What does the External Mail Server do? What does it NOT do?

  • The External Mail Server is:

an "open" POP server (the server that retrieves e-mail) that will allow you to RETRIEVE your Road Runner e-mail away from your cable modem connection.

  • The External Mail Server IS NOT:

able to SEND e-mail. Why? Because providing an "open" SMTP server (the part of the server that sends e-mail) leaves it open to abuse by people who send bulk e-mail, commonly known as "spam". Also, an "open" SMTP server is a security risk to us as well as our users.

a dialup service. This means you need to provide your own Internet connection (ie. AT&T, GTE, Lava Net, Hawaii Online, AOL, your company's network, etc...).

How do I send mail???
To send e-mail when using this service, you must use the SMTP server name (the server responsible for sending e-mail) of your current Internet provider's connection. In other words, you'll be receiving your e-mail from Road Runner's server, while sending your e-mail from a different provider's server. For example, if you're using an AT&T dialup account to go online, you will need to SEND mail via AT&T's default SMTP server.

Conditions for Use
This service is for Road Runner users only and we ask that you abide by the following conditions before you begin:

  1. Do not give out any pertinent Road Runner information to anyone.
  2. The External Mail Server is provided "as is". If you need support, please send a message to support with any questions.
  3. Use this service at your own risk. Oceanic/Road Runner can make no security or privacy guarantees on the External Mail Server.
  4. If this service is abused or misused, Oceanic/Road Runner reserves the right to shut it down without notice.

NOTE: The address of the External Mail Server has changed as of January 2000. Please make the necessary adjustments!

Do you accept these conditions?
